Leeds United could sanction Jeremiah Mullen exit as gem jets out for trial

Leeds United youngster Jeremiah Mullen has joined Stockport County on trial during pre-season, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The outlet reported on its website on Thursday (18 July) that the 20-year-old defender has joined up with the League One side in Spain this summer where he will be assessed by manager Dave Challinor.

If Mullen impresses the County boss, they may move to secure his services on loan to boost their options in the centre of defence having been promoted from League Two as champions last season.

One of the defender’s former teammates Lewis Bate is already training with Stockport having made the move to the League One side earlier this summer.

The 20-year-old only has one year left on his contract at Elland Road and is understood to be eager to play regular first-team football this season having seen a loan spell with Inverness Caledonian Thistle cut short by injury last term.

Are Leeds United close to any new transfers in the summer window?

Leeds United can’t blame Mullen for wanting to get some regular first-team football under his belt this term, as it seems unlikely he will be able to force his way into Daniel Farke’s plans in the Championship.

The German is blessed with several excellent defensive options already at Elland Road, with the likes of Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk, Ethan Ampadu and currently Max Wober all competing for a place in the starting XI.

Young players like Charlie Cresswell never quite managed to force their way into the starting XI, so it would be a huge shock if Mullen jumped from a brief loan spell in the Scottish Championship straight into a team competing for promotion back to the Premier League.

Playing week in and week out for Stockport would massively help the young defender’s development. He would only be playing a tier below the Whites and that will provide a much greater challenge than another season of academy football.
