Leeds United agree fee and personal terms to sign Celtic defender Leo Hjelde
Leeds United have agreed a fee with Celtic to sign young defender Leo Hjelde, according to Nettavisen journalist Stian Andre de Wahl.
Writing via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday night, the Norwegian journalist also reported that Leeds have agreed personal terms with the 17-year-old, who’s now due to undergo a medical with the Yorkshire club.
It is understood that Hjelde is being signed to join Leeds’ Under-23s squad despite the Norway youth international impressing while on loan at Scottish Premiership club Ross County last season.
More than a U23s player
Hjelde may be joining Leeds to play for their Under-23s next season but we feel that the 17-year-old will be in the group that transitions between Mark Jackson’s side and Marcelo Bielsa’s first-team.
The youngster is a versatile defender who can play as a centre-back, left-back and even in a more advanced role on the left-wing.
Last season, Hjelde got his break on loan at Ross County, who he joined midway through the campaign from Celtic.
During his spell there, he helped the Staggies avoid relegation as he made 11 Scottish Premiership appearances and even scored one goal.
He played mainly as a left-back for them and Leeds are short of a back-up left-back, which makes us think that he’ll be in Bielsa’s plans for most of the campaign.
Junior Firpo has come in and will be Leeds’ starting left-back for most of the season but if the ex-Barcelona ace needs resting or gets injured or suspended, who’s going to step in and replace him with Ezgjan Alioski and Leif Davis gone?
Stuart Dallas is the next best option but we saw last season the Northern Ireland international is better in the midfield.
Having Hjelde come in would mean Dallas can stay in a more advanced role up the pitch.
Hjelde will become another addition at Thorp Arch this summer, joining Amari Miller, Sean McGurk and Lewis Bate in being added to the Under-23s squad.
In other Leeds United news, a club expects to sell this midfielder before August 31 with the Whites at the table to sign him.
