Leeds United: £1.5m Sam Greenwood update emerges over permanent Middlesbrough transfer
Leeds United will be obligated to accept an offer of £1.5million from Middlesbrough for Sam Greenwood during the summer transfer window, according to Teeside Live.
The outlet reported on its website on Thursday (4 April) that Middlesbrough’s loan agreement with the Whites for the attacking midfielder includes a permanent option which can be activated for just £1.5million.
This clause means that Daniel Farke’s side will have to accept such a bid should Michael Carrick’s team pursue the 22-year-old following his loan spell where he has made 34 league appearances at the Riverside.
Middlesbrough are yet to decide whether or not to pursue Greenwood permanently and even if they did decide to secure his signature, he would still have to agree terms on a new contract which could include a drop in wages.
Will Sam Greenwood leave Leeds United and permanently transfer to Middlesbrough?
Early in his loan spell, a number of pundits and supporters suggested that Leeds United had made a mistake by allowing Greenwood to depart Elland Road on a temporary basis, such was his good start at the Riverside.
However, the 22-year-old’s form has dipped somewhat in the second half of the season, while the Whites have gone from strength to strength in 2024 and now look almost destined to win automatic promotion under Farke.

With the likes of Dan James, Crysencio Summerville, Wilfried Gnonto and Georginio Rutter impressing week in and week out at Elland Road, it is hard to see where Greenwood would have got a look in.
While a £1.5million fee isn’t great for a player with his quality, it is better than having a player sat on the bench chewing up wages without playing. Leeds would like to earn more from his sale, but they may well have to take what they can get.
Hopefully, Greenwood finishes the season strongly and drums up some more transfer interest in the final weeks of the campaign.
