Leeds set for transfer budget decision on Shea Charles deal with Southampton talks ongoing
Leeds United's pursuit of Shea Charles may throw up some uncomfortable questions.
The Southampton star has emerged as the Elland Road side's first priority this transfer window with talks currently underway.
A bid of £20million has been sent with Daniel Farke looking to bolster his midfield, but that has been rejected.
The Whites' interest is not poised to stop there, as negotiations remain intact over a summer move.
But the longer they become drawn out, the more questions that could be raised in LS11.
And the 49ers will have a decision to make based on the financial power that Leeds United currently hold.
Why Leeds could have transfer budget decision over Shea Charles
Charles will not come cheap for Leeds United, with Southampton not budging on their asking price.
Talks are continuing for the Southampton star, who is valued at above £20m by the South Coast side.
However, that valuation could pose a question for Leeds as reported by Leeds Live who confirm the ongoing talks.
According to the report: "Leeds must decide how much of this summer’s budget they are willing to part with."
However, with Leeds targeting free transfers for both Julian Brandt and Harry Wilson this summer, they could feel flexible in their pursuit of Charles.
The interest in all three targets is a diversion away from their usual transfer strategy but Leeds Live state it could be the Whites "trying to seize an opportunity that has presented itself."
Either way, the Whites will not want to leave themselves short in budget based on just one target.
How much would Shea Charles compare to last summer's arrivals?
One season in the Premier League has appeared to offer the Whites more firepower in the market, but that could be because they need fewer signings this time around.
Last summer's window has left their squad in good health, but that does not mean new arrivals like Charles are unneeded.
In the 2025-2026 transfer windows, the LS11 outfits highest priced signing was the arrival of Anton Stach who joined in a move worth £17.4m plus add-ons.
Last summer, the Whites spent £100.1m in the market overall, so if they have a similar budget this time around, Charles could take up close to 25 per cent based on the Saints' valuation.
As stated previously, forking out that much of the budget on one player could make the Whites think twice.
However, much of that will depend on how many signings they feel need to be bought ahead of the 2026-2027 season.
