Leeds may yet get helping hand in Nico Elvedi transfer pursuit - here's why
Leeds United may yet get a helping handed in their reported pursuit of Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi.
Centre-back is an area of the pitch that the Whites need to give some urgent attention to over the transfer window.
Pascal Struijk's sale to Premier League rivals Brighton in a £20million deal leaves Leeds looking a little thin in central defence.
Jaka Bijol, Joe Rodon, and Sebastiaan Bornauw are the primary options left, though the latter as yet to convince he can be a regular starter.
Max Wober has completed an injury-hit loan spell at Werder Bremen, but it is difficult to imagine he will play at part for Leeds moving forward.
Daniel Farke utilised a three-man defence for much of last season, but even if he goes back to two centre-backs next term, you feel he needs another body at the back.
What's the latest with Leeds-linked defender Nico Elvedi?
Elvedi is a player who has long-since been on Leeds' radar, at least according to reports - especially in Germany.
His future is unlikely to reach a resolution one way or another until after his participation with Switzerland at the World Cup is over.
But German outlet Bild's latest update suggests Leeds could yet get a helping hand if they do want to persist with a move for Elvedi.
The newspaper's online edition said Gladbach's sporting director Rouven Schroder will push for a sale if Elvedi does not commit his future to the club.
Elvedi's current contract runs out in 2027, and Bild says they hope to convince him to sign an extension, but if they fail then an exit could be on the cards.
If that happens it stands to reason that Leeds could be in a position of strength, especially given their long-standing interest.
Who else are Leeds looking at this transfer window?
Leeds are looking to build on a 14th-place finish on their return to the Premier League last season.
To make those incremental gains, Leeds are looking at adding real quality in the window.
The imminent arrival of Harry Wilson from Fulham should help in that regard, while Southampton midfielder Shea Charles and Julian Brandt - who is a free agent after leaving Borussia Dortmund - are on Leeds' radar.
Goalkeeper is another area of the team Farke could look to strengthen, with Parma's Japan international Zion Suzuki, and Manchester City stopper James Trafford both linked to Leeds.
