Leeds-linked centre-back set to say goodbye to current club - report

Leeds United target Robin Koch is “about to say goodbye” to Freiburg, according to German magazine Kicker.

Kock, 24, is someone who has been linked with Elland Road since Leeds’ director of football Victor Orta revealed that he had scouted the German centre-back back in January [Yorkshire Evening Post].

Talk of Koch heading to West Yorkshire fired up again at the weekend when the Telegraph reported that the former Kaiserslautern defender is someone Leeds will set their sights on signing if they cannot agree a deal with Brighton for Ben White.

Sky Sports reported on their live transfer blog on Tuesday [01:24pm] that Brighton have made it clear they are not interested in selling White this summer and haven’t even put a price-tag on the 22-year-old’s head.

That means that it is increasingly likely that Leeds will turn to Koch this summer with him preparing to quit Freiburg and try his hand elsewhere.

Based on what we’ve seen about Koch, he is pretty much a perfect replacement for White.

As reported on the Bundesliga website, the Germany international is similar to Bayern Munich star Javi Martinez for the way he can play in the defensive midfield role while also being solid in his preferred position at centre-back. The player has previously revealed he is “at home” when playing in the heart of the defence [Kicker].

Speaking after he made his international debut for Germany in October last year, national team manager Joachim Lowe was full of praise for Koch.

“Robin was strong, confident, and has charisma,” Lowe said, as quoted by FussballStadt. “He never showed any signs of nerves.”

Lowe’s description of Koch sounds as though he could be talking about White.

Leeds fans know the 22-year-old as a defender who is equally as comfortable on the ball as he is off it, showing a great range of defensive and passing attributes that go perfectly with the style of football Marcelo Bielsa employs at Elland Road.

If White doesn’t return this summer, we would be more than happy if Koch came in to replace him.

In other Leeds United news, this senior player is willing to listen to offers to leave Elland Road.
