Leeds want to sign 24y/o as cheap White alternative, Orta's name-dropped him previously - report

Leeds United will set their sights on signing Freiburg and Germany centre-back Robin Koch if they cannot sign Ben White from Brighton, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper claims that White, 22, is Leeds’ number one target but it will cost more than £30million to get Brighton to agree to sell him this summer.

It is understood that Koch is seen as a cheaper alternative if the pursuit of White reaches a dead end.

In March, O Jogo reported that as Koch is in the final year of his contract Freiburg and the state of football’s economy due to the coronavirus pandemic, the two-times Germany international could be up for grabs for just £10.8million.

Koch does sound like a similar type of defender to White.

According to the Bundesliga website, the 24-year-old plays a lot like Bayern Munich’s Spanish enforcer Javi Martinez.

Like Martinez and White, Koch can play at centre-back and as a defensive midfielder, with the Bundesliga website adding that he’s a “rangy battering ram happy” who “boasts a tremendous willingness to get stuck in and get his hands dirty”.

He sounds like the type of defender we Leeds fans would like – someone who can ruffle up opponents and become hated by opposition fans.

That wouldn’t matter to Leeds though because they would have a great defender in their squad and what is promising about this transfer report is that Victor Orta confirmed in January that Koch is someone he has profiled before.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post in the winter, Orta said: “We have 8,080 reports. In a report about a match you can evaluate six or seven players.

“I’ll give you an example, Koch playing at his level now is really difficult for the Championship, it is another level. But we are always evaluating because perhaps, in a moment, he could be available. Or we could get into another league and then he could be available.”

At least with this transfer story, you know it’s a fact that Orta has checked him out.

In other Leeds United news, this senior player is willing to listen to offers to leave Elland Road.
