Leeds can pick up phone in instant money-saving transfer move amid speculation
Leeds United can ask New York Red Bulls about Diego Luna before signing him to save money, according to Graeme Bailey.
The Whites are exploring the potential of bringing the MLS Young Player of the Year to Elland Road from Real Salt Lake [Daily Mirror].
Now it appears that Daniel Farke could make the most of existing links with the Red Bull network to help sign the 21-year-old on a cheaper fee.
Speaking to Leeds United News on 10 December, Bailey said: “Not too dissimilar to Aidan Morris at Middlesbrough. Championship clubs are looking at the American market, Morris has done a fantastic job.
“A few clubs have been alerted to that, financially it’s an untapped resource. Boro got Morris in for less than £5m, now he could be a £20m player.
“Leeds can rest on the Red Bull organisation, they can pick up the phone to the Red Bulls in New York and ask what they think about that player.
“It opens up avenues. It can save you money. I expect Leeds to be in the American market, it doesn’t surprise me the links with Luna – I’ve heard he’s a good player.”
Leeds United could save money on Diego Luna with Red Bull link
Red Bull bought a stake in the Yorkshire club in the summer with the 49ers still being the majority owners after their £170m takeover in 2023 [BBC Sport, 30 May].
Besides taking the front-of-shirt sponsor rights for the Whites’ kits for the season, there has been little impact from the energy drink giants on show this campaign.
Now the worldwide footballing network could play its role in bringing an exciting talent to Elland Road in the form of Luna.
The attacking midfielder is one of the hottest talents coming out of the MLS after scoring 16 and assisting nine since joining Real Salt Lake.

His versatility to play through the heart of midfield or out wide could be a useful asset for Daniel Farke as his side go in hunt of promotion from the Championship.
There is no guarantee that the Whites would be able to land the USA international but there is no harm in getting valuable advice from Red Bull ahead of the January or summer transfer windows.
