Junior Firpo talks now advanced as Leeds United exit days away from announcement

Junior Firpo’s contract at Leeds United expires at the end of June.

After a strong season at Elland Road, the Whites offered Firpo a new contract to rejoin the squad again in the Premier League.

However, the left-back has been linked with an exit from West Yorkshire this summer, with a return to Real Betis a potential destination.

Real Betis advance Firpo transfer

Although Firpo was a key part of Daniel Farke’s squad to gain promotion to the Premier League, an exit is now on the cards.

The Whites were keen to keep who they see as a crucial player as part of their squad for the increased demands of next term, but Firpo seems to have his heart set on a return to Real Betis.

Although the pair have been linked for some time now, it has been reported by Spanish journalist Alvaro Borrego (9 June) that Real Betis are now in advanced talks to sign a left-back.

The report also states that Firpo is one of the most likely options for the La Liga side.

Real Betis are speaking to other options, but Firpo has not hidden his desire to make a return to his former side, and with his Leeds contract soon running out, it could be a deal ready to be struck.

With talks advancing, the green light for Real Betis to make a signing could be given in the next few hours.

Leeds need to replace Firpo

Firpo leaving Elland Road certainly will be a blow for Farke’s men, with the left-back being a top performer in his side this season.

In 32 Championship appearances, the 28-year-old showed his ability to contribute to going forward, as well as defensively.

However, it seems his heart is set on an exit and with his contract expiring, there is nothing Leeds can do to change the situation that is now facing them.

Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas has been linked with a move to Elland Road as a potential replacement, but whether he would be ready to hit the ground running at the same level is yet to be seen.

That being said, it looks likely that the Whites are going to need someone new, so raiding the current Premier League champions should be the first port of call.
