Leeds United defender Junior Firpo has been linked with an exit in this transfer window as his deal runs out on 30 June.

The left-back moved to Elland Road from Barcelona back in 2021 and has been part of the club's journey in the Premier League, their promotion battle and eventually playing a key role in guiding them back to the top flight.

While Firpo has battled injury issues, he has remained the first-choice left-back for most of his time in West Yorkshire.

Leeds offer Firpo higher wages than in the Championship seasons

According to Graham Smyth (2 June), the Whites have tabled a contract extension offer to keep the Dominican Republic international at Elland Road.

This offer represents an uplift on what he earned once Leeds got relegated to the Championship, as he faced a reduction due to a clause in his contract.

Firpo has been a regular for Leeds this past season.

However, it is still not as much as what he was earning when he joined in 2021, with Marcelo Bielsa being the manager.

Smyth wrote in the Yorkshire Evening Post that the ball is now understood to be in the left-back's court with regards to him signing the deal or leaving.

There is interest from Lyon, AC Milan as well as Real Betis, so it's not that he is short on suitors in the coming months.

Firpo could seal Elland Road exit if an upgrade is found

Leeds United must prioritise upgrading from Firpo at left-back due to his inconsistent performances and injury concerns, which could jeopardise their Premier League survival.

His contract puts the Whites at a crossroads: extend his deal or seek a replacement.

If a suitable, budget-friendly left-back, offering stronger defensive reliability and attacking output, is available, Leeds should avoid increasing Firpo’s current offer, preserving funds for the upgrade.

A target with proven experience in one of Europe's top five leagues could fit the bill.

However, suppose no viable replacement emerges within their financial constraints, they may be forced into blinking.

In that case, Leeds may need to offer Firpo a slight pay increase to secure his services, ensuring squad stability while continuing to scout long-term options to bolster their backline for the relegation battle.
