Junior Firpo stance on Leeds United exit emerges as Real Betis eye January transfer

Real Betis are considering signing Leeds United ace Junior Firpo in the January transfer window, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Spanish outlet reported on its website on Tuesday (15 October) that the Dominican Republic international would not be opposed to returning to the European club having previously played for Betis and Barcelona.

Betis are competing in three different competitions this season and are therefore eager to bolster their ranks when the window opens again in the new year, with Firpo one of the players under consideration.

The left-back’s current deal at Elland Road is set to expire at the end of the season and earlier this term Daniel Farke admitted talks were yet to begin over a potential contract extension [Leeds Live, 20 September].

Will Junior Firpo exit Leeds United amid Elland Road transfer interest?

Firpo’s future at Leeds United was always going to come into focus sooner rather than later as he entered the final months of his contract and it is only natural that his previous ties with Spain would be mentioned.

While the Dominican international clearly loves Leeds and has enjoyed his time at Elland Road, he will have to consider his options over the coming months, particularly with promotion still hanging in the balance.

At 28 years old, the left-back is unlikely to want to spend another season in England’s second tier, particularly if he has the chance to play top-division football in Spain.

Alternatively, Leeds may well feel that they need a more reliable left-back if they hope to compete in the Premier League next season, especially after Firpo struggled to hit the ground running in the top flight last time out.

Ultimately, the defender’s future remains completely up in the air and isn’t obvious what will happen in the long run. If a contract remains unsigned by the time January rolls around, it wouldn’t be a surprise if one or two bids were lodged for his services.
