Ian Poveda close to Leeds United loan exit
Ian Poveda is close to completing his Leeds United loan exit to Blackburn Rovers, according to LeedsLive journalist Joe Donnohue.
Writing via his personal Twitter profile after The Athletic’s Phil Hay claimed there was a “good chance” the 21-year-old was set to join the Championship outfit, Donnohue said: “As reported earlier this month, Ian Poveda close to joining Blackburn Rovers from Leeds United on loan.
“At a stage where he needs regular minutes, which aren’t coming at Leeds. Loan manager appointment indicative of ensuring players go out to clubs tailormade for their development.”
It seems Blackburn are looking to strike gold twice in successive seasons with a swoop for Poveda.
Liverpool teenager Harvey Elliott spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at the Lancashire club and wowed onlookers with some dazzling displays at Ewood Park.
He returned to his parent club in the summer and appeared as a substitute in their opening day win over Norwich City before starting Saturday’s victory over Burnley at Anfield.
Elliott’s loan spell at Blackburn looks to have done him the world of good and given him some vital senior experience.
Although Poveda is a few years older than the Reds attacker, Leeds will be hoping his loan will yield similar results.
It looks like a herculean task for the Whites winger to ever push ahead of Jack Harrison and Raphinha under Marcelo Bielsa, but a full season of Championship football could act as a springboard for the 2020 signing from Manchester City.
He has looked lightweight at times but appears to have bulked up over the summer and that should stand him in good stead as he drops down to the second-tier.
