How Leeds United have had last laugh as details emerge on Anatoliy Trubin bid
Leeds United had a summer bid rejected for Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.
The Ukraine international is not a name that was linked with the Whites at any point in the summer.
Trubin sparked wild scenes in January when scoring a late goal against Real Madrid to send Benfica through to the Champions League knockouts.
His stock was high back then and Leeds made a move at some point in the summer window.
The Whites brought in James Trafford from Manchester City for a club-record fee rising to £45million.
Michael Zetterer also arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt, but it may well have been he was not first choice to provide back-up to Trafford.
Why did Benfica reject Leeds' bid for Anatoliy Trubin?
Trafford was Leeds' top target and the West Yorkshire outfit pulled off a coup in landing the Englishman.
Many other names were linked with the Whites in terms of back-ups, with Zetterer ultimately the man who will now fulfil that role.
It is not known how much Leeds bid for the goalkeeper, but Benfica rejected it as they felt they could land up to £34m from Juventus.
Juve's bid was not forthcoming and Trubin has since lost his spot in the Benfica side, with the Portuguese club now said to be eager to offload.
It means Leeds had the last laugh, with the Whites now well set in terms of goalkeepers for a few windows to come.
How do Michael Zetterer and Trubin compare?
Zetterer made 22 club appearances last season for Frankfurt, while Trubin played 32 times for Benfica.
As per FBref data, Zetterer had a save percentage of 65.3 per cent, compared to 75 per cent for Trubin.
Trubin also had a better clean sheet record - 40.6 per cent versus 28.6 per cent - although the quality of opposition in Germany would have been stronger.
Trubin also boasted an impressive two penalty saves from the four he faced, while Zetterer did not save any of the two he faced.
There is also the small matter of the goal that Trubin scored.
The Ukrainian's stats may be more impressive, then, but Daniel Farke will not lose any sleep after missing out on his signature.
