Georginio Rutter Leeds United exit twist emerges as Brighton make transfer move
Leeds United attacker Georginio Rutter will now decide over his future as Brighton have activated the £40million release clause in his contract, according to David Ornstein.
The Athletic journalist reported on 14 August that the Premier League outfit had two previous offers rejected for the French attacker.
The 22-year-old’s deal at Elland Road runs out in the summer of 2028.
Ornstein wrote on X: “Brighton & Hove Albion activate £40m release clause in contract of Leeds United forward Georginio Rutter. #BHAFC saw £29m + £35m offers rejected before satisfying conditions of #LUFC exit mechanism today. 22yo must now make decision.”
Georginio Rutter’s exit will certainly hurt Leeds United
Rutter’s potential exit from Elland Road, following Brighton’s activation of his £40million release clause, could significantly impact the team.
Having been a key creative force in Leeds’ attack, especially in the Championship, where he provided six goals and fifteen assists last season, his exit would leave a void in midfield creativity and goal-scoring threat.
His departure means Leeds lose one of their most dynamic players, whose flair and ability to unlock defences were crucial under Daniel Farke.
This sale, coming after the departures of Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville, further depletes a squad already facing financial pressures due to relegation.
The loss of Rutter not only affects on-field performance but also morale, as he was becoming a fan favourite and a central figure in the team’s rebuild.
His exit might necessitate a reshuffle in tactics or a scramble in the transfer market to find a replacement, potentially at a higher cost or with less quality, which could hinder Leeds’ ambitions for promotion back to the Premier League.
