Farke wants Elvedi ‘immediately’ as £8.2m Leeds transfer update emerges

Daniel Farke wants to sign Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi “immediately” for Leeds United, according to BILD.

The German newspaper reported on Friday (page12, 3 January) that the 28-year-old dreams of playing in the Premier League and has a £8.2million release clause in his contract with the Bundesliga outfit.

Monchengladbach are willing to listen to offers for the centre-back in January and while he would prefer to land in the top flight [Ben Jacobs], Farke will do everything in his power to bring Elvedi to Elland Road.

The Swiss international worked under Farke during his brief spell at Monchengladbach before he arrived at Leeds.

Farke could lean on his connections with the Bundesliga side to steal a march in the race for his signature, but the lack of Premier League football at Elland Road would be a sticking point for any potential deal.

However, the Whites boast one of the most talented squads in the Championship and are leading the division heading into the midway point of the campaign, with promotion to the top flight a very real possibility.

Elvedi would be a dream addition to the defensive ranks for Leeds, having featured over 300 times in the Bundesliga – his extensive top-flight European experience would give Farke a further edge in the title race.

Furthermore, the options at Elland Road are very few and far between – although Ethan Ampadu has not long returned to the side after his long-term injury woes – Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk have been tasked with starting every Championship fixture across a gruelling schedule.

While it may prove challenging to convince Elvedi to leave Monchengladbach for a non-guaranteed brief spell in the Championship, the guarantee of promotion could get the deal over the line and secure a signing who will undoubtedly play a huge role in the title charge.
