Borussia Monchengladbach have previously assured Nico Elvedi they would listen to offers for the defender with Leeds United increasingly keen, according to Bild.

The German publication reported (2 January) that 18 months ago when Elvedi, 28, signed his last contract with Gladbach, the Bundesliga side promised they would be open to future offers from England after an agreement with Wolves was stopped in its tracks.

The 56-cap Swiss international has been valued at around £10million and Daniel Farke - who worked with Elvedi during his last post at Gladbach - now appears keen to add key defensive depth this month.

As reported by GiveMeSport (31 December), Elvedi may prefer to wait and see if Leeds earn promotion to the Premier League before deciding on his future next summer - by which time he will have been a Gladbach for a full decade.

Leeds United want Nico Elvedi in January

Leeds United are aiming to stamp down their authority in the January transfer window, and would pull off a deal most of the Championship could only dream of if they can prise away an established European defender for an eight-figure sum mid-season.

This is especially pertinent given how long Elvedi has represented the German outfit, for whom he has played well over 300 times.

As revealed by TEAMtalk (1 January), Leeds remain confident they can win the race for the versatile Swiss defender, whose "dream" is to play in the Premier League.

Wolves do however retain an interest having come close to an agreement in the summer of 2023, while RB Leipzig could offer what they view to be an upgrade while staying in the Bundesliga [GiveMeSport, 31 December].

With Gladbach's position weakening due to the agreement in place with Elvedi's camp upon his last deal, the move happening in January could hinge on whether the player is willing to gamble on helping steer the Whites back to the Premier League this season.
