Fabrizio Romano: Leeds United 'obsessed' with trying to complete Aaronson deal

Leeds United are “obsessed” with trying to sign Brenden Aaronson from Red Bull Salzburg before the January transfer window closes, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Leeds have tabled two bids to sign Aaronson, 21, and neither have been accepted by Salzburg – although the second bid of £20million has not been rejected either [The Athletic].

Guardian journalist Romano reports that Salzburg would rather not let the USA international leave but suggests that a change of heard could always be on the cards as the deadline nears.

“Yes, it’s true. It’s true Salzburg rejected this proposal from Leeds,” Romano said in a video clip on the Que Golazo Podcast Twitter account, and on YouTube, on Tuesday [25 January].

“They want him, they’re obsessed with him, they want to sign him. But Aaronson is an important player

“They feel that he would be perfect for Leeds immediately but the problem is Salzburg prefer to wait.

“They have European football, they want to keep him until the end of the season and maybe sell him in the summer.

“This is why the situation is still not easy between the clubs.

“The player would be open to this move but from the club’s side, from Leeds’ side and from Salzburg’s side, at the moment, nothing is agreed yet because they hope to keep the player until the end of the season.

“We will see what happens in the coming days. At the end of the transfer window, anything can happen. But at the moment, it’s not an easy one for Leeds.”

£20m still on the table

As Salzburg have not accepted nor rejected that £20million bid from Leeds, you would have to assume that it’s being mulled over by the top-brass at the Austrian outfit.

It’s a big decision for them to make, to be fair.

Salzburg are in the last-16 of the Champions League and next month, they’ll play Bayern Munich in one of the biggest clashes in the club’s history.

However, they basically have the Austrian Bundesliga won before the season starts each year so they’d only really be keeping hold of Aaronson just to improve any chances – if they had any chance – of beating Bayern.

We could understand Aaronson wanting to stay at Salzburg as it means that he’d be able to say he’s played in the knock-out stages of the Champions League and that’s not something he’ll be able to do at Leeds any time soon, unfortunately.

However, Romano then says that Aaronson is keen on the move.

It’s an odd one and the stances of Salzburg and the player don’t make the most sense.

We’ll see what happens before the window closes but with each passing day, we’re starting to feel more and more confident that a deal like this will be done in the summer.

In other Leeds United news, this “brilliant” player’s agent is in talks about leaving Elland Road on loan in the next few days.
