Fabrizio Romano claims Atletico Madrid are in talks to sign Leeds United-linked Matheus Cunha
Fabrizio Romano claims Atletico Madrid are in talks to sign Hertha Berlin forward Matheus Cunha, amid a summer of speculation linking him to Leeds United.
The 22-year-old Brazilian has just won gold at the Olympic Games with Brazil and looks to have caught the attention of La Liga champions Atletico, as Italian transfer guru Romano detailed via his personal Twitter profile on Sunday morning [15/08/21].
He wrote: “Atletico Madrid are interested in Matheus Cunha as their main target. Talks are ongoing to sign the Brazilian striker from Hertha Berlin – there’s no agreement for Dusan Vlahovic.”
Hopes fading away
Leeds have been consistently linked with the “stunning” [BT Sport] South American over the last few months, with the Express reporting last month that Victor Orta has held talks with the forward’s representatives.
However, our interest appears to have died down and a move looks unlikely at this stage.
There are less than three weeks until transfer deadline day and all the noises are that a central midfielder is next on the Whites agenda, with Huddersfield Town 22-year-old Lewis O’Brien widely reported to be the club’s main target.
Talk of signing a new attacker has quietened somewhat, with The Athletic’s Phil Hay writing on his personal Twitter profile earlier this week that Leeds will only sign a new winger if the right opportunity presents itself at an affordable price.
Marcelo Bielsa only has Helder Costa as a senior wide option behind Raphinha and Jack Harrison, with young wingers Crysencio Summerville and Ian Poveda also in reserve.

However, it looks like Cunha will not be on the move to West Yorkshire.
Even if we do re-ignite our interest, beating Spanish giants Atletico to Cunha’s signature would be a tough task, and their pursuit of him appears to be fairly advanced.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites want to sign this Portuguese attacking sensation.
