Ethan Ampadu makes Leeds United transfer admission ahead of 30 August deadline

Ethan Ampadu has admitted he hopes Leeds United sign some “big characters” ahead of the 30 August transfer deadline.

The Wales international has been named as the Whites’ captain for the new season and has played in all three of Daniel Farke’s side’s opening matches of the season in the Championship and Carabao Cup.

Supporters and pundits have slammed Leeds for their lack of incoming business in recent weeks after several high-profile departures were confirmed, but Ampadu insists that is just part of football.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds (20 August) he said: “In any season, not just Leeds, but every football club has incomings and outgoings.

“You understand, when you’re part of football, it’s not until the transfer window is over everything’s clarified. Of course, it’s never nice to lose players and any player that moves on, we wish them all the best. Likewise, any player that comes in, we want them to be part of what we want to fight for.

“Naturally, we have been very good at just keeping a close-knit for no matter who’s here. We all get on well. You miss some big characters, but hopefully, there’s some big characters coming in.

“It’s a really good place. As weird as it seems to say because, as you say, there’s been some outgoings, but this group’s together and we’re all fighting for the same thing.”

Are Leeds United close to any new signings in the summer transfer window?

The fact that Ampadu has admitted that even he thinks Leeds United need some new characters in the changing room suggests that everyone in Elland Road knows there is work to be done in the coming days.

Farke has lost three of his most important and influential players in Georginio Rutter, Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray so far this term and only the teenager has been replaced ahead of the end of the window.

Particularly in attack, Leeds look incredibly short of numbers and that simply has to change before the end of August, otherwise, it could have a massive impact on the Whites’ promotion push over the coming months.

Hopefully, both Ampadu and the supporters’ prayers will be answered sooner rather than later and Farke will manage to add a few new faces to his ranks to refresh the changing room after so many high-profile departures.
