Danny Murphy urges Raphinha to improve Leeds United goalscoring record, discusses exit links
Danny Murphy has waxed lyrical about Leeds United winger Raphinha after his equaliser in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Everton.
The 24-year-old rescued a point for the Whites at Elland Road with a powerful strike past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Ex-Liverpool midfielder Murphy has lavished praise on the Brazilian, but believes he should be scoring more goals.
“He has got super sharp skills and pace,” Murphy told talkSPORT on Monday [23/08/21].
“I’m really surprised he only got six goals last year, he should be doubling that.
“There’s been rumours about him, he’s been linked to other clubs. I think Liverpool were at one point, but if he carries on the way he’s started the season…”
Raising the bar
Let’s address the exit rumours to start with – Raphinha is going nowhere this summer.
That was obvious at the start of the window despite persistent links with Liverpool.
Could he end up there eventually? Possibly – he’s certainly a Champions League-level player.
But, for now, his development is best served with the Whites for at least one season more.
Despite a stellar debut season for Leeds, there is plenty more work to be undertaken by the Brazilian if he wants to emulate the successes of Premier League wing wizards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.
The Liverpool forwards regularly plunder double-digit goals in a single season, and that is the level Raphinha should be aspiring towards.
Leeds finished ninth last season but only Patrick Bamford scored more than eight goals.
If Raphinha sharpens up in front of goal that could go a long way to emulating, or even bettering, last season’s league success.
