Chelsea's Alfie Gilchrist might not be cut out to play regularly for Leeds United, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The YEP revealed that a source close to the west London club had "reservations" over Gilchrist's ability to be a key player for the Whites next season if he is to make a move this summer.

Gilchrist and Chelsea are reportedly yet to be formally approached by Daniel Farke's side, but with the 20-year-old defender likely to be available on loan this summer.

With the Peacocks needing cover across their entire defence this summer, Gilchrist's versatility at centre-back and right-back would be useful, but the YEP's report suggests that attempts to bring the youngster to Elland Road are still a long way off.

Alfie Gilchrist would be sensible Leeds United transfer

Leeds' loan players had a mixed time of things last season, with some players barely getting a look-in and others establishing themselves as key pillars of Farke's promotion bid at Elland Road.

One in the latter camp was Wales international Joe Rodon, who returns to Tottenham having featured 50 times for the Whites in all competitions and being one of the first names on the team sheet [Football London].

Archie Gray was Leeds United's first choice right-back for much of last season.

While Rodon is likely to be the Peacocks' number one transfer target this summer, their failure to achieve promotion via the Championship play-offs means their transfer outlay will be limited [Alasdair Gold].

Therefore, bringing in a highly-rated prospect like Gilchrist, who has made 17 first-team appearances for Chelsea, would be a shrewd move on Farke's part, adding a player with lots of potential and the versatility his side will need next season.

Even if Rodon does return to Elland Road, signing Gilchrist could see the right-back spot locked down in the Chelsea man's favour next season, allowing Archie Gray - if he stays with the club - to make his highly-anticipated move into midfield a permanent one [BBC Radio Leeds].
