Charlie Cresswell transfer latest at Leeds United as new Hannover update shared

Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell is no longer on the radar of 2. Bundesliga outfit Hannover 96, according to Bild.

The publication from Germany [10 June] suggests that whilst there was contact with Leeds and Cresswell’s camp “a long time ago”, Hannover have now moved on to other targets.

Cresswell’s future at Elland Road is in limbo following just 133 minutes of Championship football in the recent season, with Daniel Farke appearing not to reintroduce the centre-back into his plans anytime soon.

The article in Bild says: “There was contact with the central defender – but that was a long time ago.

“He wants to move, but he is no longer an option in Hannover.”

Charlie Cresswell set to leave Leeds United

It doesn’t look like a move to Hannover for Cresswell then, but it appears increasingly certain that the 21-year-old will depart Elland Road this summer.

The club are desperate to accumulate funds this month to toe the PSR ruling line and have a clutch of players deemed surplus to requirements under Farke as he reassembles his squad.

Among the senior Leeds defenders to see their contracts run down, Luke Ayling has as expected left the club, whilst Liam Cooper remains in talks over extending his expiring deal.

Charlie Cresswell is close to leaving Leeds United

Cresswell is at an age where regular football is a must, and found himself a temporary home at Millwall, with whom he spent the 2022-23 season and made 28 league outings, just missing out on a play-off place.

Manager at the time, Gary Rowett, said last year that Cresswell was a “fantastic” defender who will develop into a “top player” [Yorkshire Evening Post].

But after failing to kick on this season – his sole league start all year came way back in August in a defeat by Birmingham City – the only viable resolution for all parties appears to be a new club.
