Centre-mid speaks out about future with many Leeds fans excited by Elland Rd speculation

AZ Alkmaar midfielder Teun Koopmeiners has spoken out about his future in the Netherlands amid speculation linking him with a move to Leeds United.

According to a report by the Telegraph last week, Leeds set their sights on signing Koopmeiners, 22, as Marcelo Bielsa sought new additions to his midfield before the international transfer window closes on Monday.

Koopmeiners is reportedly valued at over £10million by AZ with the Netherlands Under-21s ace a key player at the AFAS Stadionand also the club captain.

He has now been asked to address speculation about his future at AZ Alkmaar after being linked with Leeds. However, it’s not good news for the many fans who were excited by his potential arrival.

“I will stay with AZ,” said Koopmeiners, as quoted by Voetbal International journalist Simon Zwartkruis via his personal Twitter account on Sunday afternoon.

Leeds fans were drooling over the prospect of potentially signing Koopmeiners when he was linked with a move to Elland Road by Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath.

The left-footed midfielder is able to play in central and deep-lying roles in the centre of the park while he is also versatile enough to play as a centre-back.

By the sounds of it, Koopmeiners is a perfect player for Marcelo Bielsa to be able to mould into what he wants him to be due to his youth, his ability to play in multiple positions, his leadership and his undoubted quality on the ball.

It’s a shame that Koopmeiners won’t be heading to West Yorkshire before the transfer deadline passes on Monday.

But he’s someone who Victor Orta is likely to be keeping a close eye on over the coming weeks and months, especially if he continues to shine in the Dutch Eredivisie for AZ.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have ended their interest in this 26-year-old Serie A player.
