Celtic want to sign Josh Mulligan as Leeds United transfer latest revealed before January

Leeds United have been joined by Celtic in the race for Hibernian midfielder Josh Mulligan.

Leeds could be set for a very busy January window, with loans most likely at this stage.

Daniel Farke’s side drew 1-1 against Sunderland on Sunday, leaving them 16th in the Premier League table, but crucially, seven points clear of 18th-placed West Ham.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin extended his scoring spree against Sunderland, ensuring Leeds don’t need to go searching for a striker in the winter sales.

Leeds face Celtic competition for Josh Mulligan

One area of his squad that Farke may look to bolster in January, however, is in midfield.

Hibernian’s Mulligan has been linked with a move to Leeds in recent weeks, as the 23-year-old continues to enjoy an excellent debut season at Easter Road following his summer move from Dundee FC.

However, as per a fresh report in the print edition of the Scottish Daily Mail, Leeds now face stern competition for his signature.

Hibs are said to only want to sell in the summer, with Nottingham Forest also another option for the Scotland midfielder.

Josh Mulligan’s season in numbers so far

Mulligan has instantly become an integral member of David Gray’s Hibernian side so far this season, appearing in all 19 Scottish Premiership games so far, starting 18 of those.

A box-to-box midfielder who is comfortable operating as a six, eight or as a 10, the Scotland international has bagged one goal and provided four assists in the league, whilst adding a further two goals to his tally in cup competitions.

As per FotMob, he’s averaging a 7.15/10 rating per game in the league this season, and has played 1,568 minutes of football.

He’s created 17 chances, completed 17 successful dribbles, took 46 touches in the opposition box, won 40 tackles, made 103 ball recoveries and won possession in the final third 14 times this season – all of which rank among the best for Scottish Premiership players in his position.

So, whilst Leeds have some quality options through the middle of the park, Mulligan could be a very shrewd long-term addition to make, and could provide some essential cover in numerous positions should injuries or transfer exits occur.
