Celtic reject Leeds United bid to sign Matthew Anderson

Celtic have rejected a bid from Leeds United for young defender Matthew Anderson, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

In June, the YEP reported that Leeds have tabled a bid to sign the 17-year-old Scotland youth international but no update was given after that.

Now, almost two months later, the newspaper claims that Leeds’ “initial interest was rejected” by Europa League club Celtic.

Rare failure for Victor Orta

Ever since Leeds hired Orta as their director of football, the Spaniard has regularly adding young players to the youth set-up at Thorp Arch.

This summer, Orta has added Lewis Bate, Sean McGurk and Amari Miller to the Under-23s squad while Kristoffer Klaesson has also been snapped up to serve as the second-choice goalkeeper in the first-team and potentially play a role for the Under-23s too.

Anderson is only 17 so he could have been seen as an Under-18s or Under-23s signing but he’s able to play at left-back so you would imagine that he could have played in both teams.

Either way, it does not sound as though he’s coming to Leeds this summer.

Orta might want to shelve the interest for now and revisit a move for Anderson in January or next summer because he is young and anything can happen during the next year or so with him.

Leeds have signed a lot of young players in Orta’s time at the club and a lot of them have struggled to make the grade in the senior squad.

Anderson might have if he came but let’s just focus on the ones who have joined us so far and pray they can come good and repay Leeds’ faith in them.
