Brentford beat Leeds United in race to sign free agent Nico Jones
Brentford have beaten Leeds United, Leicester and Norwich in the race to sign young defender Nico Jones, according to TeamTalk.
Jones, 19, has been a free agent since the end of last season when his contract at Oxford United expired.
It is understood that the Irish centre-back held talks with a number of Premier League clubs, including Leeds, but he’s now set to join Brentford and play for their Under-23s this season.
One that got away?
Let’s be honest here, not many of us will have heard of Jones until this update by TeamTalk.
Victor Orta and his team of scouts will no doubt have heard of him though and done all the homework they can on the Irish youngster.
He’s played just eight times in senior football for Oxford United and last term he represented the League One club four times in the EFL Trophy.
In all four of Jones’ appearances, the Us won with one of those games being a 2-1 victory against Chelsea’s Under-23s. Lewis Bate played for Chelsea’s youngsters on that day and he’s now signed for Leeds.
Jones won’t be though with it seeming as though he’s heading towards joining Brentford on a free transfer.
Brentford are very much a club on the rise and the geography of the deal is bound to have had an impact too as the London club is nowhere near as far away from Oxford as Leeds.
Good luck to Jones but we doubt we’ll be seeing him as the one who got away in the future.
In other Leeds United news, Bielsa was spotted at the Etihad Stadium earlier this week, sparking speculation on Twitter.
