Big offer needed by Leeds United to sign Hertha Berlin star Matheus Cunha

Matheus Cunha hasn’t just signed a new contract at Hertha Berlin amid speculation linking him with Leeds United, according to Max Bielefeld.

The Sky Sports Germany journalist reported via his personal Twitter account on Thursday that Cunha, 21, signed his supposed new contract at Hertha in September but it was simply never announced by the club.

It was reported this week that Cunha had signed a new deal at Hertha but it seems that won’t have any bearing on a possible move to Elland Road as the contract isn’t as new as it has been made out to be.

Bielefeld claims that Cunha’s situation in Berlin is unchanged and “if a big offer comes in this summer, they would consider selling him”.

He adds Leeds are “still interested” in the £27.5million-rated forward.

‘Special’ player

Cunha ticks a lot of boxes that Leeds United will need ticking before making a move to sign a player.

Firstly, the Brazilian is still young at the age of 21 and secondly, he’s been in superb form at Hertha Berlin this season, scoring eight goals and supplying eight assists in 28 appearances across all competitions.

He also seems to suit the style of play that Leeds employ, drawing comparisons to Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino, who’s known more for his link-up play rather than his ability to stick the ball in the back of the net.

Statistician Sam McGuire has shared an interesting tweet about Cunha that compares his Bundesliga stats of this season to Firmino’s at Liverpool in the Premier League.

As you can see Cunha assists and attempts more shots than Firmino has despite having far fewer touches inside the box and playing fewer passes.

Hertha’s former head coach Bruno Labbadia has described Cunha as being “something special” who “can always produce something with a moment of individual brilliance” [Bundesliga].

He’s quite simply the kind of player who we’d love to see playing for Leeds next season and there’s no doubt he could give Patrick Bamford a run for his money up front.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are after this £20million-rated ace who’s been relegated from the Premier League.
