BBC pundit convinced that 19-year-old will exit Leeds in January

BBC Radio Leeds pundit Noel Whelan is convinced that Tottenham will recall Jack Clarke from his loan spell at Leeds United in January.

Clarke, 19, joined Spurs on a permanent deal in the summer but was instantly allowed to re-join the Whites on loan for the rest of the season.

However since that switch, the England Under-20 international has been handed just one appearance in the Championship when he came off the bench for the last 19 minutes of the win against Luton in November.

The Express reported in September that Spurs are set to recall Clarke in January and ex-Leeds star Whelan expects to see that happen.

“There’s no doubt Jack Clarke will leave as Tottenham won’t allow him to stay on the bench all season,” Whelan told Football Insider.

One of the main reasons why Clarke has not featured much this season is due to the wealth of options that Marcelo Bielsa has in the wide areas.

If Clarke returns to Tottenham then Whelan does not see Leeds signing anyone to replace him.

“Leeds have plenty of wide men in the squad so I don’t expect they will sign someone to replace him,” Whelan added.

“You’ve got Jack Harrison, Helder Costa, Pablo Hernandez…Jamie Shackleton and Stuart Dallas can play there as well and Alioski is a brilliant weapon as well.

“I can see him filling in as a winger, and replacing Clarke, if the first choices like Harrison and Costa are out, or come off. He’s played there most of his career, can create and score goals and is one of the best finishers in the squad.

“It’s been tough on him to lose his regular place at left-back, but that’s only because Stuart Dallas has been outstanding.

“He’s been coming on and scoring as a substitute, which shows that Bielsa’s selections are working. Everyone seems to be happy with their role and playing well.”

Leeds will more than likely have a quiet January transfer window where they will only sign players if they lose anyone from their first-team.

Eddie Nketiah could be on his way back to Arsenal so he’s the only player who is likely to be replaced but Clarke’s lack of impact in the senior squad means that losing him will not be a blow.

You can understand Tottenham’s decision to recall Clarke and although he has had a miserable season at Elland Road, everyone will no doubt wish the best for the York-born attacker.
