Ayase Ueda stance shows Leeds United already know their next mistake to avoid
Leeds United's hunt for attacking reinforcements has hit an interesting point.
Feyenoord striker Ayase Ueda is a player on the Whites' radar, and after 24 goals in the previous Eredivisie season, he seems to tick plenty of boxes.
Ueda has also recently starred at the World Cup, scoring twice and getting one assist.
He would also arrive with a familiar face at Elland Road already, with Ao Tanaka being able to help him settle in.
However, while he may seem like an excellent fit for the Yorkshire club, the Whites are certainly showing brain over brawn in terms of financial muscle.
And Dominic Calvert-Lewin is right at the centre of it all.
Why Leeds are refusing to overpay amid Dominic Calvert-Lewin problem
The signing of Ueda to Leeds has been discussed, according to the Daily Mail, but Leeds do not feel a potential deal is worth the price.
While no fee has been listed, the stance from the LS11 side presents a clear mindset heading into the summer.
After his exploits in the Dutch top flight, Ueda is clearly an excellent goalscorer, but after Calvert-Lewin's season in 2025-2026, it is not worth risking what has worked for the Whites already.
The arrival of another forward would likely come in to play as understudy to the Englishman should he need a rest or gets injured.
Forking out high fees on top-quality players who would ultimately be second choice is not a feasible strategy for a club like Leeds.
The LS11 side have to be smart and the latest report shows that they already know what mistake to avoid in the market.
The striker profile Daniel Farke must get right this summer
With Ueda seemingly off the list for Leeds, perhaps the next best option would be to search for a younger striker.
Rather than signing an already bonafide centre-forward, who would not immediately lead the line, Leeds could benefit from signing someone to learn from Calvert-Lewin instead.
A player with more time on his side, a hunger to develop and have everything to prove could be the smarter investment this summer.
After the season that Ueda had with Feyenoord, the Japanese international would likely not be happy if Calvert-Lewin continues from last season's displays.
If that is the case, any other forward would likely spend plenty of time on the bench, behind the Englishman.
