Alan Nixon: Original Leeds United centre-mid target plays abroad but Conor Gallagher fits

Journalist Alan Nixon has shared his insight into the Leeds United pursuit of a new central midfielder this summer.

Nixon, who works for The Sun, made the claim on his personal Twitter profile on Friday morning [23/07/21] when asked if Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher was the player he was “referring to” as being ahead of Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien on the Whites transfer list.

He wrote: “It fits…but I heard the original target played abroad.”

Who is it?

Leeds have been linked with a number of central midfielders in recent weeks as the Whites ramp up their pursuit of new signings ahead of the big Premier League kick-off versus Manchester United on August 14.

One of the most recent players was FC Midtjylland’s Jens Cajuste, the 21-year-old Sweden international.

Swedish news outlet Expressen reported on Tuesday night [20/07/21] that the Whites were in talks with the Danis club and Cajuste’s agent.

However, a source close to him told LUFCFANZONE that “the player does have serious interest from the Premier League, but not from Leeds United”.

In the meantime, a move for Gallagher has grown legs after Football.London claimed on Friday [23/07/21] that a “presentation” had been made to the England Under-21 international to prise him from Chelsea on a loan deal.

Several other news outlets and journalists have since backed up that report, but it still feels as if director of football Victor Orta may have something else up his sleeve, and perhaps that will be his original target in Europe, as suggested by Nixon.

Signing Gallagher on loan doesn’t make much sense unless there is a permanent clause inserted at the end of it, and that’s not the case according to reports.

Therefore, we’re still banking on this mystery midfielder from Europe, and it might be that a loan for Gallagher is Orta’s backup option in case the transfer becomes too costly and the club needs to hold back on funds for other areas of the pitch.
