Alan Nixon: COVID-19 case shouldn’t scupper potential Leeds United signing of Lewis O’Brien
Alan Nixon doesn’t believe Lewis O’Brien’s positive COVID-19 case would scupper a move to Leeds United this week but has cast doubts over it happening due to money.
The Sun journalist was asked on his personal Twitter profile today [09/08/21] whether he was expecting Leeds to sign the 22-year-old Huddersfield Town midfielder this week.
He replied: “It shouldn’t really be that hard, and yet…”
He was then asked whether O’Brien testing positive for COVID-19 last week and subsequently missing Huddersfield’s Championship opener on Saturday would change events.
Nixon replied: “It shouldn’t…more money to Huddersfield changes things.”
Still in the hunt
With just weeks left of the transfer window, there is a real chance that this could be the only remaining transfer the Whites make this summer.
Jack Harrison was signed permanently last month after his long loan spell at the club while Junior Firpo was signed to solve the problem position at left-back.
There have been a raft of signings for the Under-23 side, but apart from that, it’s been rather quiet at Elland Road this summer, particularly in comparison to last year when big-money moves were sanctioned for the likes of Rodrigo and Raphinha.
Marcelo Bielsa appears to be pretty content with his squad, with only a central midfielder and perhaps an attacking option to come in.
O’Brien looks to be the midfielder he is pursuing, and despite reservations from some Leeds fans who would prefer a more ambitious signing, Bielsa has consistently shown his eye for a player and improving them.
The English midfielder’s positive COVID-19 case may have sparked fears that a signing could be delayed or even scuppered, but it still looks like if Leeds up their offer, he will be making the short trip to Leeds.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites want to sign this Portuguese attacking sensation.
