£10.3m Boulaye Dia clause to be triggered before summer with Leeds United in pursuit

Leeds United are likely to miss out on Senegalese striker Boulaye Dia with Serie A side Salernitana set to trigger the optional buy-out clause in his loan contract, according to Tutto Salernitana.

The attacker netted Senegal’s first goal of the World Cup in their 3-1 win over hosts Qatar on Friday (25 November) after a fine club season in which he has netted six goals in 14 games while on loan at Salernitana from Villarreal.

The Italian club have the option to buy the Senegalese international for £10.3million at the end of the current campaign, and they are expected to do so after his break-out season.

But according to Italian news site Tutto Salernitana, the £10.3 million clause will “probably be exercised even in advance of the next summer transfer market”.

Blow

News that Leeds are set to miss out on Dia comes as a big blow to Jesse Marsch, who is in desperate need of attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window.

The modest fee of £10.3 million looked a tempting one for the Leeds hierarchy and a risk-free signing who could still compete for first-team minutes on a regular basis.

The price tag on premium goal scorers, especially ones who deliver on the big stage, is usually significantly higher than that of Dia – making the fee look even more reasonable.

Leeds are in dire need of another central striker, despite Rodrigo’s admirable form, with Patrick Bamford unable to get off the Elland Road medical table for long enough to get back to scoring ways.

If Victor Orta were to throw a bigger figure than the £10.3 million at Salernitana, the Italian club could be tempted to buy the forward this season and immediately sell him on to a Premier League side in order to make a quick profit.
