Sam Matterface stunned by 'superb' Tyler Adams after the Leeds United midfielder display v England
Sam Matterface has been left stunned by Tyler Adams after the Leeds United captain caused England “all sorts of issues” in their World Cup group stage clash.
The 23-year-old was a constant thorn in England’s side with Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham completely ineffectual during the fixture.
Matterface suggested the Whites’ summer signing was “superb” for Gregg Berhalter’s team, with the USA now facing a must-win match against Iran to secure qualification.
“I thought Tyler Adams was tenacious and superb, smothering whoever he had to cover for England, he was pressing high up and causing all sorts of issues,” said Matterface (Gameday Podcast, 06:39, 26 November).
The concern for Leeds is that Adams’ performances will only see his stock rise more in the coming weeks and months. Despite him only arriving at Elland Road this summer, there’s a good chance he will be attracting attention from elsewhere. He’s still only 23, captaining his country and a regular in Leeds’ Premier League side.
What’s positive is that Adams is looking like a bargain for Leeds after his summer move from RB Leipzig. At the moment, it seems a bad move from the Bundesliga side to let the combative midfielder leave the club.
With every positive performance for the US, Adams’ value is only going to rise. If he does leave the club in the future, Leeds will almost certainly double their initial investment on the midfielder.
However, for now, Adams will stay in Yorkshire and hopefully be an integral part of Jesse Marsch’s side climbing up the Premier League table. Going forward, it has become clear Adams will be a vital cog in anything positive Leeds do achieve this season.
