Ilia Gruev jets into UK for Leeds United medical, multi-million deal to be done in hours – Phil Hay

Ilia Gruev is set to undergo a medical with Leeds United ahead of a £5million switch from Werder Bremen, according to Phil Hay.

Writing in The Athletic’s live transfer column (31 August, 11:04 am), Hay reported that the 23-year-old midfielder has travelled to England with the transfer expected to be completed within the next 24 hours before the window slams shut.

He is expected to be one of two midfielders to make the switch to Elland Road before Friday, with Rangers’ Glen Kamara and Celtic’s Matt O’Riley both still targets.

Of the two, Kamara is the most likely to join as the 27-year-old is described by Hay as the “primary target”.

It looks like it is set to be a busy end to the transfer window at Elland Road with plenty of activity going on in terms of both incomings and outgoings. While it seems as if a deal for Gruev is now more or less close to completion, with just medical tests left to pass, if the Whites want to sign another midfielder, they will need to act fast.

As for Gruev himself, it is a brilliant bit of business for Daniel Farke’s side. The Bulgaria international burst onto the scene in 2019 and has been a part of the Werder Bremen first team set-up ever since. He made 31 Bundesliga appearances last season and his blend of youth as well as know-how could make for the perfect midfielder.

He will be key in the club’s fight for promotion from the Championship back to the Premier League, and if they can bring someone else in to join him, they could quickly turn around their poor start to the season.

In other Leeds United news, the club are prepared to let four players leave.
