Sam Greenwood is heading to Middlesbrough on a season-long loan with the future of three other Leeds United youngsters up in the air, according to Phil Hay.

Writing in the Athletic's transfer column (30 August, 4:20 pm), Hay revealed that 21-year-old Greenwood is not in Daniel Farke's immediate plans and is therefore set to join the Boro on a season-long loan.

He has made just two appearances so far all season for the Whites, most recently coming on as a substitute during their Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out defeat to Salford City on Tuesday 29 August.

Leo Hjelde - who started against Salford - Cody Drameh and Darko Gyabi are three other players who could still leave Elland Road before the transfer window shuts.

Clear out

Farke is clearly trying to trim his squad down and get ready for the Championship campaign ahead after a difficult start in the division. It is always tricky for clubs when the league season gets underway with the transfer window still open, as the future of players remains in question until it is officially shut - and sometimes even after.

And Elland Road appears to be one of many places across the country which is set for a busy final few days of the window, both in terms of incomings and outgoings. In Greenwood's case, it makes plenty of sense for the player to secure a loan away if he is not in his boss' plans going forward.

A move to Middlesbrough is fantastic for him as it means he can continue to play in the Championship this year and some potential first-team minutes will do him the world of good.

Plenty for fans of the West Yorkshire club to keep their eyes on.
