‘Wow’, ‘Worldie’ – Many Leeds fans blown away by U23s ‘baller’ in Friday clash v Wolves

Leeds United look as if they might have landed themselves a real bargain in the shape of Joe Gelhardt.

The young striker arrived at Elland Road from Wigan Athletic this summer for a fee of just under £1 million, and he’s already begun to catch the eye in Yorkshire.

The teenager opened the scoring in the Whites’ U23s clash against Wolves on Friday afternoon, and it really was a special strike to say the least.

Former boss Paul Cook once said that the England youth international could “find space in a telephone box”, and on the basis of this goal here, he wasn’t lying.

Gelhardt picks up the ball on the edge of the penalty area before wriggling and writhing his way past a couple of defenders.

He then works the ball on to his left foot and fires home a ferocious shot at the near post past a helpless goalkeeper.

His effort is struck quickly and with precision, and there’s almost an instinctive quality about his position in the box in relation to his target.

Obviously, there is only so much that can be taken from an U23s game, but this really was an impressive goal, and it can’t hurt that Marcelo Bielsa was in attendance to witness it.

We all know that the boss has a tendency to inlaced youth in his first team plans, and there’s no reason to believe that Gelhardt won’t get his shot in the near future if he keeps up this level of output for the reserves.
