‘Surely not’, ‘Behave yourself’ – Many Leeds fans react to transfer update on 31-cap int’l
Leeds United fans must wake up some mornings scratching their heads in disbelief.
If you think about where the club was even three years ago, to now be sat seventh in the Premier League table with one of the best managers in world football at the helm is absolute madness.
But there we were and here we are – and as if things couldn’t get any madder, it would appear that the Whites are now turning down the opportunity to sign players from some of Europe’s elite competitors.
According to Italian outlet Alfredo Pedulla, Leeds were in the running for Juventus winger Douglas Costa, but have already gone cold on the prospect of signing him.
It’s understood that Juve want a fee of around £41.8 million for the player – what they themselves paid for him.
Granted, that in itself was probably enough to dissuade Elland Road chiefs, especially after a big summer of spending.
But the fact that Leeds have actively chosen to rule themselves out of the running for a 31-cap Brazil international with some of his best years ahead of him is jaw-dropping.
That’s not to say it’s the wrong decision.
Marcelo Bielsa knows what he likes in a player, and if he doesn’t like Costa then we have to trust his judgement.
But to be in a position where we have the power to walk away from a potential deal like this is testament to just how far our star has risen in recent years.
In this case, a deal Leeds don’t do could say just as much about where the club is at as one that they do complete.
