Sebastiaan Bornauw edges closer to Leeds United exit after ultimate embarrassment
Leeds United came back from behind to beat Derby County in the FA Cup third round, and it was an afternoon full of talking points.
Daniel Farke made seven changes to his Leeds side that were beaten 4-3 by Newcastle United in a Premier League classic in midweek, and one of those was Sebastiaan Bornauw.
Bornauw made only his fourth start in all competitions for the Whites this term after performing admirably in recent draws against Liverpool and Manchester United.
The 26-year-old was deployed on the right of a back three by his manager, but despite Leeds coming back from behind to beat Derby 2-1, the Belgian-born defender had a nightmare afternoon.
Sebastiaan Bornauw was shocking vs Derby County
Bornauw started in a back three alongside captain Ethan Ampadu and Jaka Bijol against the Rams, although his time on the pitch was cut short at half-time.
Farke substituted Bornauw for James Justin after injuring his groin, and whilst the German was forced into that change, it was arguably an alteration that needed to happen anyway.
The former Wolfsburg ace struggled at Pride Park after losing possession a whopping eight times in 45 minutes and winning just one tackle.
Bornauw has been linked with a return to Koln on loan this month, and after watching him suffer against Championship opposition, Farke may accelerate his exit from Elland Road.
A key reason why he hasn’t been out of the club yet is because of Rodon’s injury, but with the Welsh international closing in on a return, an exit is the best option for all parties.
Leeds want to sign a defender
There is even more chance of Bornauw leaving Leeds if Farke gets the defender he wants through the door, and one transfer update gives them hope of sealing a new signing.
Farke is keen to bring Danilho Doekhi to Leeds from Union Berlin, with the 27-year-old seeing his contract expire in June.
Doekhi has been targeted by Leeds for a while and would offer them some quality defensive cover, something the manager is keen to address.
Encouragingly for the fans, Doekhi has been compared to Virgil van Dijk due to his aerial prowess and strength.
