MOT View: Massimo Cellino comments on suspension, Leeds fans will surely disagree

The former owner of Leeds United Massimo Cellino has called for the instant postponement of football this season amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

Cellino left Leeds somewhat a hated figure from his time at Elland Road and his latest suggestion would potentially see the Whites miss out on promotion to the Premier League.

The current problem is much worst in Italy, with the country on an emergency lockdown to halt the spread of the virus – something which hasn’t happened as of yet in England.

Cellino suggested in a recent interview that football means nothing during times like this, and the season must end immediately to concentrate on next season.

“And if we talk about football, everything has to be moved to the next season,” he told Corriere Dello Sport.

“The season is gone. Closed. Finished.”

Cellino is commenting on the season with his current side, Brescia, sitting bottom of the Serie A – convenient?

Leeds fans would surely disagree with that statement, and it appears that the common theme outside of Italy is that the best idea is to finish this season whenever possible.

Angus Kinnear has been praised for his response to the current suspension, with many separate EFL clubs agreeing that the best course of action is to remain calm and reschedule the remaining nine fixtures.

La Liga president Javier Tebas, who is part of a core committee put together by UEFA which includes the Premier League and the European Club Association, admitted that football could return in mid-May – something which is a big hint that could see Cellino disappointed.

Either way, Leeds fans have never seen eye-to-eye with the Italian and this occasion will be no different with promotion in touching distance.
