MOT View: Worrying update could put halt to project restart in PL, bad news for Leeds?
A worrying update from Brighton chief Paul Barber confirmed that three of his players have tested positive for Coronavirus, something which could affect the Premier League’s project restart, could that also affect Leeds United?
If the Premier League can’t be finished this season, it could lead to legal battles over which clubs are relegated to make way for the promoted sides from the Championship.
There is confusion amongst clubs and fans at this moment, with it not being clear when and how football will return in England.
Barber’s comments are clearly very worrying though, and it could definitely put a halt to the Premier League’s agenda on Monday.
“It is a concern,” he told Sky Sports.
“Unfortunately we’ve had a third player test positive yesterday (Saturday, May 9), so despite all of the measures that we’ve been taking over the past few weeks, where the players haven’t been involved in any significant training at all, we’ve still suffered another player testing positive for the virus.
“So there are concerns and I think it’s normal for all clubs to have those concerns.”
EFL chairman Rick Parry has confirmed that the Premier League would be breaking their agreement should there be no relegations this season, so we still expect that to take place.
The picture seems clearer in the Championship, with the Times reporting that a growing number of clubs are now wanting the season to end with promotion being decided by a point-per-game model.
Do we think the Premier League could go down the same route? It is certainly possible the longer it goes on. Aston Villa currently have a game in hand and that could certainly affect the restart.
The worrying update from Brighton will certainly jump to the top of the agenda on Monday, and that could be bad news for the project restart.
