MOT View: Leeds set to take big transfer gamble with player who will cost a total of £22.3m

Leeds United are on the hook for a lot of money if they get promoted.

German outlet Kicker has stated again that there is an obligation to buy Jean-Kevin Augustin if Leeds get promoted.

There’s been no mention of a get-out clause on Leeds’ side and while Augustin himself could turn down the move, why would he not want to play in an upwardly mobile Premier League side?

His alternative is to return to RB Leipzig, a team that by all accounts don’t want him.

All signs point to Augustin signing on a permanent deal and it’s going to cost a lot, according to Kicker.

It’s fair to say he’s not been worth the outlay so far. Kicker claim that Leeds have already paid £3.5m as a loan fee.

He’s been restricted to just 48 minutes of football so far and is now reportedly injured again. He might not play again this season.

That would mean Leeds have paid £73k a minute for his services so far. And, as minutes go, they’ve not been that impressive.

We still hope that Augustin will come good in the Premier League, but we’re concerned about his fitness and are desperately hoping there are no underlying issues.

Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t go soft on his players and if Augustin has a problem it could turn out to be a very expensive transfer.

Kicker say the obligation is for another £18.8m, making a total of £22.3m – a total that smashes the club record.

Augustin’s pedigree is amazing – PSG, RB Leipzig, Monaco and now Leeds. He’s still got a hell of a lot to prove, though.
