MOT View: Leeds ace could have dropped hint on future with latest comments
Gaetano Berardi has stepped up massively for Leeds United in the past month. In the absence of Liam Cooper, the defender has come in and helped the Whites continue their momentum in the Championship.
The 31-year-old is in the final year of his current deal at the club, and Marcelo Bielsa would only have Cooper has his only permanent option in the middle of defence should Ben White not make the switch after his loan deal.
Despite that, Leeds still haven’t extended the Swiss enforcer’s deal at the club. Phil Hay recently suggested that Berardi could favour a summer exit to go back to Italy at the end of the campaign [The Athletic].
Berardi has spoken out on the future of the club, and whether or not he will be a part of that after the end of this season.
“I don’t know what the plan of the club is,” he told the Yorkshire Post.
“But we will have to talk.
“Of course I am enjoying it. When I play I am enjoying it and even when I am not playing it’s difficult to be out but it’s good to be in this team and to see the lads winning games.”
The fact that he has admitted how he is enjoying it at Elland Road this season would suggest that he is potentially ready to put pen-to-paper on a deal that could see him finish his career in West Yorkshire.
There have been question marks around his reliability in defence. Berardi has more than answered those potential problems in the past couple of months.
Berardi has been solid alongside White, and apart from the blip against Cardiff on Saturday – the impressive defensive record has continued with Leeds keeping a couple of clean sheets against Hull and Huddersfield.
The fact that Berardi is as happy on the bench as he is whilst starting shows that Berardi would be ready to stay at Elland Road. This could be the latest hint on his future.
