Liam Cooper drops hint on Leeds United future after Wembley heartbreak
Liam Cooper may have just dropped a hint over his Elland Road future after Leeds United suffered promotion heartbreak at Wembley Stadium.
The Scot’s contract is set to expire next month and there have been few hints that his stay could be extended ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
However, with Leeds now condemned to a second season in the Championship after facing relegation from the Premier League, Daniel Farke may be inclined to keep him around for at least one more season.
In addition to this, Cooper may have just dropped a massive hint on his future, taking to X on Tuesday (28 May), writing: “Proud of our Club. We will come again,” followed by a white heart.
Would the 32-year-old write this message if he were not staying at Elland Road?
Will Liam Cooper extend his Leeds United stay?
Since arriving at Elland Road from Chesterfield in August 2014, the defender has become a cult legend among the fans, making 284 appearances in Leeds colours.
However, this season will have been rather frustrating for him, having only made eight league starts and seven more substitute appearances in the Championship.
Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu were the preferred pair, even when Pascal Struijk was injured, leaving Cooper with a spot on the bench. Rodon may not be returning, though.
Considering Leeds’ financial issues this summer, with the club needing to raise an eye-watering amount of funds through player sales, it makes sense to keep Cooper around on a cheap contract.
The defender’s experience is invaluable for a team fighting for Premier League promotion, especially one that has been there before and secured Premier League football for the Whites in the past.
Of course, there are several issues that the hierarchy needs to focus on at Elland Road over the next couple of months, but Cooper’s future could be more important than some realise.
