Leif Davis endears himself to every single Leeds fan after celebration vs Derby County

Leif Davis made his Leeds United roots well known with his celebration in Ipswich Town’s 2-1 win over Derby County on Saturday.

Davis came through Leeds‘ academy and made 14 appearances for the Whites’ first team prior to joining Ipswich in July 2022.

The left-back has been a major success at Portman Road, playing a key part in the Tractor Boys’ promotion to the Premier League two seasons ago.

And Davis clearly still has Leeds at the front of his mind if scenes at Pride Park are anything to go by.

Leif Davis produces ‘binoculars’ celebration after winner vs Derby

Davis scored what proved to be the winner for Ipswich in their 2-1 triumph away at Derby, after Rhian Brewster’s penalty had cancelled out Lewis Travis’ earlier own goal.

The 26-year-old certainly enjoyed the moment and pulled out a ‘binoculars’ celebration, in tribute to the Marcelo Bielsa ‘spygate’ scandal.

Davis was a Leeds player at the time, with then-manager Bielsa admitting he sent a member of staff to watch Derby train – as he did every opponent.

There is still no love lost between Derby and Leeds fans as a result, and Davis was more than happy to whip out the celebration.

It goes without saying it did not go down well with those in the home stands who understood the reference.

What did Marcelo Bielsa say about ‘spygate’?

Bielsa revealed around the time of the incident that he personally paid a £200,000 fine given to Leeds after being punished by the EFL.

“The sanction [the EFL] gave us of £200,000 – it is a financial sanction against the club, not against me, but I am responsible for it,” Bielsa said.

“That is why I paid it from my pocket, the financial sanction.”

Bielsa said he respected the decision as he understands why certain rules are in place.

The whole saga only strengthened Bielsa’s bond with Leeds fans, and that bond has never been broken in the years since his Elland Road departure.

Plenty of water has passed under the bridge in the seven years since, but it is a chapter that will be fondly remembered for many more years to come.

And if nothing else, Davis will certainly have endeared himself to every Leeds fans for his celebration in the East Midlands.
