Leeds United transfers: Emi Buendia agrees deal until 2027 – David Ornstein
Leeds United look set to miss out on Emi Buendia, at least on a permanent deal, after the Argentine agreed a contract extension with Aston Villa.
David Ornstein of The Athletic (26 January) revealed the agreement, which will see Buendia contracted at Villa Park until 2027.
As well as Leeds under Daniel Farke – who managed Buendia at Norwich City – Villa also received interest from clubs across Europe and in Saudi Arabia, and the player himself has been eager to assess his options and not jump straight into a Championship move (The Sun on Sunday, 26 January).
“Emi Buendia reaches agreement with Aston Villa to extend contract by one year,” Ornstein shared on his X page (26 January).
“Current deal ends 2026 – revised terms add 12 months. The 28-year-old has interest from Germany, Italy and Saudi but Aston Villa not planning to sanction a permanent exit at present.”
Buendia’s future is now outrightly solved with the contract extension, but does limit the chances of a permanent exit being sanctioned during the current transfer window.
Leeds United shouldn’t give up hope on Buendia
Leeds United should not have to bring an end to their pursuit of Buendia, who remains a fringe player in the Aston Villa squad largely left behind as much of their success under Unai Emery came while he recuperated from a lengthy injury.
The one-cap Argentina international is still a talented player and is in prime age, having experienced both the Premier League and promotion from the Championship.
His profile would be perfect for Farke’s Leeds and would help push Brenden Aaronson, who has operated in the number 10 role Buendia could best occupy.

Buendia’s contract will simply see a year added onto it which protects Villa financially, and takes pressure off his current club having to make any snap decision in the current window.
If an interested suitor want the creative ace badly enough, it would be difficult for Emery’s side to say no to a hefty bid – and a loan deal could still be on the cards with Buendia knowing his future at Villa is there to fall back on.
In other Leeds news, the Whites have been offered the chance to sign a Brazilian ace for around £2million.
