Leeds United should explore other options amid £8m Trai Hume news
Leeds United should now look at alternative targets to Trai Hume this summer after a transfer update around the defender has been shared.
It was reported on 17 June that Leeds were set to enter a transfer battle for the Sunderland stalwart [LeedsLive] amid their search for more cover at right-back.
Since then a report has emerged from the Sunderland Echo (18 June) which claims that the Black Cats rate the defender at a fee in the region of £8m.
Why Leeds United should look elsewhere for their right-back
Although the Northern Ireland international played an integral part in Sunderland’s season last term by playing every single Championship game for the club, the £8m fee feels a little much for Leeds to be paying.
Granted, Leeds’ right-back situation isn’t the strongest depth-wise, however, the club still have the likes of Sam Byram, Jamie Shackleton and even Archie Gray who can play in that role.
Admittedly, despite starting the vast majority of the season as a full-back, Gray’s preferred position is in the centre of the pitch as a defensive midfielder.
His skillset suits that area of the pitch much better and he can use his range of passing more to his advantage.
Hume has been previously linked with a move to the West Yorkshire outfit, however, more recently the Whites have been touted to make a loan move for Chelsea youngster, Alfie Gilchrist.
The transfer saga of Joe Rodon is also still ongoing and with the addition of both Gilchrist and the Wales international, Leeds’ defensive shortcomings may find themselves solved.
Although the 22-year-old would be an ideal addition to Daniel Farke’s squad, there are plenty of other options out there that won’t take as big of a chunk out of the transfer budget.
This would then leave Farke with some money in his transfer kitty in order to make additions in other areas of the team which may be depleted by the end of the window.
In other Leeds news, the Whites have set their demands should Max Wober depart the club this summer.
