Leeds United ‘dodge bullet’ as leaders named for Kelechi Iheanacho transfer

Leeds United have dodged a bullet by not moving for Sevilla star Kelechi Iheanacho.

A report from Sky Sports on 1 February claimed that Middlesbrough are leading the race for the former Manchester City ace with Celtic also interested in the 28-year-old.

The Whites were also speculated to be interested in a deal for the Nigerian forward [SCORENigeria] but that looks to be dead in the water.

The Elland Road club are all-in for Southampton star Cameron Archer [Ben Jacobs], which is a deal that makes much more sense.

Leeds United dodge Iheanacho bullet

The fact that Leeds seem to be pursuing a deal for Archer rather than Iheanacho should be a relief for Whites fans everywhere.

For starters, the former Aston Villa man is five years younger than the former Leicester ace, meaning that if Daniel Farke’s side can sign him permanently, he will have more years at the top of his game.

Also, the Nigerian would command a significant amount in wages, Archer’s salary demands are likely to be considerably lower.

The 23-year-old has scored two goals in the Premier League for a struggling Saints side and notched 11 strikes the last time he played in the Championship on loan at Middlesbrough in the 2022/23 season.

Meanwhile, Iheanacho has failed to score in nine La Liga appearances this campaign and notched just five goals in the second tier last season with the Foxes.

Archer represents better quality and better value at this stage of his career than the Nigerian, so the Elland Road club should do everything they can to secure his signature.
