Farke selection decision on Leeds United ace Ramazani could backfire despite ‘Massive’ admission

Daniel Farke could risk overplaying Largie Ramazani if he starts for Leeds United against Sunderland on Friday (4 October).

The winger, signed for £10million from Almeria in the summer, has taken full advantage of his opportunity, with Dan James and Manor Solomon’s injuries offering up a place in the side.

While Farke is not blessed with many options in his squad, the attacking choices have been kinder than at the back and Ramazani, who has two goals and one assist since coming into the starting XI, could be overused if he plays near enough the full game on Friday.

The Whites boss told the Yorkshire Evening Post his plans for the player [2 October]: “Three games in six days was never the plan but if he’s really capable it would be massive. I’m pleased with the progress he’s making and the minutes are beneficial for him. Hopefully he can have a good impact on Friday night.”

Largie Ramazani could start third Leeds United game in six days

Friday’s contest is already looking like an important one in the scope of Leeds United’s season, with league leaders Sunderland having won six of their eight matches so far – Farke’s visitors will aim to be the first opponent to score at the Stadium of Light this season.

And while Ramazani leads the threat to do just that, the lack of football he started his Elland Road career off with makes him slightly more at risk of a short-term burnout – possibly why the German unexpectedly withdrew him against Norwich after scoring.

Following his move from Spain, the tricky winger played a combined 30 minutes during his first month in a Leeds shirt but now he is up to speed, has started the last three games and delivered.

He looks a constant threat – but to make his third start in under a week is something Farke will be hoping results in the reward outweighing the risk, as his body is still acclimatising to the rigours of the Championship.

The question would be who the alternatives are – and despite Ramazani’s equaliser at Norwich and a rare underwhelming Joel Piroe cameo, the Dutchman’s impact off the bench this season has been largely impressive and the demanding fixture run could see him earn a starting place.

It’s very hard to take Ramazani out of the side right now, that has to be acknowledged – but a revision of his potential role on Friday could be a wiser long-term idea for his sharpness.

However, this is football and Farke will be tempted by the idea that if the 23-year-old Belgian can start on Wearside and continue his excellent patch before the international break, it’s even better.
