Darko Gyabi is ready to be unleashed at Leeds United after inheriting England responsibility

Darko Gyabi has been a surprise performer for Leeds United since moving from Manchester City, and he’s ready to pounce on a first-team opportunity.

During Kalvin Phillips’ move to Manchester City in the summer, Leeds United raised eyebrows by insisting that 18-year-old Gyabi be involved in the deal.

As a result, the Whites ended up signing him for £5million and tying him down on a four-year deal – a piece of business that looks far better after his first few weeks at Thorp Arch.

Gyabi initially slotted into Leeds United’s youth setup, with his move largely viewed as a long-term plan to push him into the first team.

But the English midfielder has seemingly fast-tracked his progression with a number of impressive performances, starting with the highly-anticipated Under-21s match against Southampton a week ago.

Gyabi starred as Michael Skubala’s side stormed to a 6-2 victory. Gyabi looked like a seasoned professional, showing great signs of composure and technical ability in the heart of midfield.

Of course, that one performance alone wasn’t enough to warrant him a spot in the first team, but Gyabi followed it up with a handful of other impressive performances.

The latest came for England’s Under-19s side against Denmark, where Gyabi was handed the captaincy. Fellow Leeds teammate Sonny Perkins stole the headlines by scoring to keep up his 100% record this season, but yet again Gyabi shone in midfield.

With a hectic Premier League schedule on the horizon for Jesse Marsch’s side, Gyabi should be in contention for a spot in the first team as the American manager is forced to rotate his starting lineup.

He looks more than capable of handling the physicality of the Premier League and could be used at times by Marsch to keep the duo of Tyler Adams and Marc Roca fit over the autumn period.

With six games coming up in October, Marsch will be looking for ways to add depth to his squad. Gyabi can do just that.
