Caoimhin Kelleher transfer a no-brainer for Leeds United amid Liverpool reveal

Angus Kinnear must do everything possible to sign Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher for Leeds United.

TEAMtalk reported on Wednesday [18 December] that the Whites have “serious interest” in Kelleher ahead of the January transfer window, with Illan Meslier heading towards the door at Elland Road.

And a move for the Liverpool goalkeeper makes perfect sense based not only on the quality between the two, but also their wages.

According to Capology, the Republic of Ireland international is said to earn a measly £10,000-a-week at Anfield, which is three times less than what Meslier earns at Leeds.

With the opportunity to significantly upgrade between the sticks and cut the goalkeeper wage bill by a third, it goes without saying that signing Kelleher should be an absolute no-brainer.

Leeds United must throw kitchen sink at Liverpool for Caoimhin Kelleher

While a deal to bring Kelleher to Leeds may sound too good to be true, it is possible that the Whites could make their move if promotion to the Premier League is achieved.

The Whites are well on course to secure automatic promotion and even push for the Championship title as we approach the midway point of the campaign, with a 10-point gap to sixth-placed Middlesbrough and only three points adrift of league leaders Sheffield United.

A return to the top flight will open many doors for Leeds in the summer, but bringing Kelleher to West Yorkshire now would all but secure their status as a Premier League outfit.

Furthermore, the 25-year-old has already played enough games for Liverpool to be eligible for a winners’ medal should Arne Slot’s side win silverware in the Dutchman’s first year at Anfield.

So the choice is simple – waste away on the bench watching Alisson take all the plaudits now he’s back from injury, or move to Leeds, with an even more passionate fanbase than the Reds, and finally become the number one goalkeeper his quality deserves.

However, several unnamed Champions League sides are expected to enter the race for his signature, and unfortunately, Kinnear will be powerless to sway his decision should he be able to play regular football in Europe’s elite competition.

While the speculation is all ifs, buts, and maybes as things stand, there is one absolute: Leeds cannot afford Kelleher to slip through their fingers.
